Have you ever felt insecure about what God has called you to do or the path He’s having you walk down? Do other people’s opinions affect your confidence when it comes to those things? Maybe He’s calling you to do something that other Christians don’t agree with. Maybe He’s having you do things that seem stupid or pointless to other people. If that is the case, first, let me tell you, you are not alone!
One perfect example of this is Noah. The man built a giant ark to save his family for an upcoming flood when it had never even rained before! I can only imagine the criticism, slander, and rejection he got from others. Yet, he pressed forward and obeyed God. In the end, his family and all species of animals were saved.
Perhaps our calling isn’t as “crazy” or controversial as Noah’s. However, there are five reasons I want to share with you as to why you shouldn’t care about what other people think when it comes to what God is calling you to do.
1. GOD DIDN’T TELL THEM WHAT HE TOLD YOU
God didn’t call them to do what you’re doing. Yes, we can have similar callings but that doesn’t mean we have to fulfill them the same way as each other. We are each different and God uses those differences to fulfill His purpose.
2. THEY’RE NOT YOUR SAVIOR OR JUDGE
Other people are not your Savior. God is. And at the end of your time here, when you meet Him face-to-face, He’s going to ask if you did what He called you to do with your time here on earth. Did you fulfill your calling? Did you love Him? Did you love others? He is the one and only judge who can tell you, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” HE is the only Savior. So why should anyone else’s opinion matter? They didn’t sacrifice their Son and conquer the grave to save you from the punishment for your sin. They didn’t forgive you. They didn’t put care and concern into every last detail of creating you. So why should their option matter?
3. SOMEONE NEEDS WHAT YOU HAVE
Whatever it is that God is calling you to do, someone needs it. Whether it’s to write a book, start a YouTube channel, be a missionary, minister to the homeless, use your artistic abilities for His glory, whatever it may be, someone needs it! If ninety-nine people judge you but one person is helped because you did what God called you to, that’s all that matters.
4. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU, IT’S ABOUT HIM
No need to go into a lot of detail about this one. It’s self-explanatory. We should be doing what He asks us to do to glorify Him, not ourselves. If other people’s opinions are keeping you from being obedient to your call, you’ve made it about you and not Him. In short, you need to get over yourself.
5. IT’S NO ONE ELSE’S BUSINESS.
It’s that simple. I’ve always felt that if someone has a problem with what I’m doing, they can take it up with God.
Trust me, I know it can be scary at times to step out of your comfort zone and do what God is calling you to do. I’ve let people’s opinions affect me and caused me to fear doing what God has asked me to do. However, the closer I draw to God the more confidence He gives me because I realize I am equipped, qualified, and chosen. That confidence from God far outweighs others judgment or opinions.
The bottom line is that Satan will do whatever He can to keep you from fulfilling God’s calling because he knows it will do damage to his kingdom and bring victory to God’s. So don’t let other people stop you from being obedient to God. Don’t let the enemy win! You are equipped with the grace to accomplish all He has called you to do.
